Before the US Constitution, there was the Magna Carta. Understanding Where We Are and Where We Come From as a Country

LISTEN NOW! Without the awareness of our history, we can take for granted what took place that birthed what presently is. This couldn’t more true in America. If one were asked what the founding document of America was, some might say the U.S. Constitution, or maybe the Declaration of Independence. Actually, there was another document that came before both; The Magna Carta. It was the very words written in this document that we read the ideals found in the U.S. Constitution.

As CBN News reports, the Magna Carta was written more than 800 years ago. As  Sir Robert Worcester, chairman of the Magna Carta Committee, explains, “Eight of the ten in the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States, are straight from Magna Carta.”

Before the Magna Carta was drafted, England was suffering horrible atrocities under the leadership of King John. CBN describes King John as “inept, greedy, corrupt, and showed mercy to no one.” King John had his own unique way of raising the needed finances for his desires while in leadership. “He was selling off widows to widowers and instructing them that they had to marry this woman and if they didn’t want to, then he’d fine them.” Additionally, “If the barons owed him money, King John took their children as hostages until full payment was made.” The English could only take so much of this brutal leadership. They had their own way of forcing the King to the negotiation table. But, as the people had hoped, a document of peace had been formed; “originally called the Articles of the Barons, contained 63 clauses that limited the king’s powers in matters of the church, courts, trade, taxes, and individual rights.”

While we may see the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence as critical in the founding of America, neither one could have resulted in the reality that they are today without the events of the Magna Carta fully being realized. See the full story of what took place in England, how the Magna Carta fully influenced the Constitution, and so much more.
